Galatians 5 - Standing Fast In the Liberty of Jesus A. The apostle urges that all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. The apostle takes notice of the latter here, because he is speaking of their behaviour towards one another; and, when he makes use of this as an argument to persuade them to mutual love, he intimates both that this would be a good evidence of their sincerity in religion and also the most likely means of rooting out those dissensions and divisions that were among them. Further, it is laid down, if there had been a law capable of giving life, righteousness would be by the law. Thus the law was ordained by angels in the hands of a mediator. Nay; he communicated unto them the gospel which he preached among the Gentiles. The superior Trinity is made up of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. II. And so, it was something that was quite familiar the castration. Freedom, though, requires resistance against a return to bondage. (4) Coveting is a sin which best illustrates Paul's statement, "I would not have come to know sin except through the Law" (verse 7). Galatians 5:16. It is a grim illustration at which a polite society raises its eyebrows, but it would be intensely real to the Galatians who knew all about the priests of Cybele. This is what the law commands, but those who want to put themselves under the law cannot do it. And it is given to me through my faith in Jesus Christ. It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator." There was no difference in the blessing of Christ: man's guilt and God's grace were alike indiscriminate. Being found only in Christ, it supposes the manifestation of grace; light does not in the same way that truth does. And God held the reins that the truth might be kept unsullied and pure; and he goes south and north as the Lord guided His servant, but not to Jerusalem to those that were apostles before him. But he was not thus disobedient to the heavenly vision. He is governed by principles by which he lives. The names of the different forms of government are suggestive. It needs to be boistered by God's spirit. But if ye bite and devour one another, [you better] take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. This passage, however, indicates they are having disputes. "I certify you, brethren," says he, "that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. In Galatians 5:1-15, the apostle Paul discusses the nature of Christian freedom, beginning with an admonition to "stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage" (Galatians 5:1, NKJV).Paul contends that Jesus Christ came to set believers free from a burdensome, legalistic existence as slaves to the law. And so, such things leaves an unending list of things of the flesh. And what is this? Finally, he concludes by putting the sentence of death, if I may so say, on circumcision, and all such as might adopt it. She is as one that has no husband. When the prophet speaks of any one living, it is by faith "The just shall live by faith." Christ lived, died, and was resurrected so that we might be free. Such is the secret of true power. (i) Peshat, its simple or literal meaning. Nevertheless, there never was one that had a deeper sense of the importance of walking, if need were, alone with God. Those that are of faith, not those who pretend to the law and do it not, are blessed with their father. The works of the flesh. I choose the best facts; for I have no wish to rake up abuses. Thus, the idea is, in their contentions they would destroy the spirituality and happiness of each other; their characters would be ruined; and the church be overthrown. And a little leaven soon leavens the whole lump. Man had his duty to God, and be ought to have. And then concludes the chapter with a caution against pride and envy. The very reverse of their system is true. take heed that ye be not consumed one of (ii) There is the obligation to our fellow men. (1.) He draws particular attention to this fact ere he closes: "You see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand." The sense is, if you contend with each other; and the reference is, apparently, to the strifes which would arise between the two parties in the churches - the Jewish and the Gentile converts. He does not deny that others preached it; but if so, they preached the same truth. The salutation ( Galatians 1:1-5 ) a. But it is life after death to law, and consequently in another sphere. Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like ( Galatians 5:21 ): So, the such like covers a lot of things. There followed Paul teachers, Judaizers who brought another gospel, which was not really a gospel. It was something painful to bear. But if you snap at one another, and devour one another, you must watch that you do not end up by wiping each other out. In other words: "You have gained liberty through Christ, i.e., You are above all laws as far as conscience is concerned. Anything else would have been imperfect; but still it had essentially a transitional character. Meanwhile another and a better sort of blessing is given, as a better Seed also is given the true Heir of all the promises of God, even Christ the Lord. The comparison would take in the Old Testament saints; or the application ("even so we") is to those then alive, who had been under that state of things. It is quite obvious that there was a hindrance of some sort. But though the apostle here only mentions the crucifying of the flesh with the affections and lusts, as the care and character of real Christians, yet, no doubt, it is also implied that, on the other hand, we should show forth those fruits of the Spirit which he had just before been specifying; this is no less our duty than that, nor is it less necessary to evidence our sincerity in religion. And that's why Paul was persecuted by the Jews, because he was saying, "The law of Moses is not necessary for righteousness or for salvation. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, but that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Yet how true it is, the more we look below the surface; indeed, in our day it becomes more and more palpable to the eye. If Peter was acting rightly now, this had all been a mistake, and consequently the gospel nay, solemn to say, Christ Himself would be thus a minister of sin. It is to be noted that the summit of all meanings was the allegorical meaning. He will not hear of any pretended misunderstanding. Far from wishing to gain credit, either for the gospel or for his own apostolic place, in consequence of being linked with those that had been apostles before him, he insists on that very independence which they counted a reproach. I once was in horrible bondage to my flesh. The allusion is to They're wanting to strive, they're wanting to argue; they're wanting to prove their points how that baptism is essential for salvation. It can be used for the pus of an unclean wound, for a tree that has never been pruned, for material which has never been sifted. All is confusion. This they never thought of doing. To this he gives the most solemn asseveration: "The things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not." Along with himself he takes care expressly to couple others: "and all the brethren which are with me." It can mean the beneficent use of drugs by a doctor; but it can also mean poisoning, and it came to be very specially connected with the use of drugs for sorcery, of which the ancient world was full. take heed that ye be not one of another utterly destroyed. For He knows our tendency to mingle law with grace in some form or measure, and treats that which was of the fathers and long before Moses, as a foreign ingredient deleterious to Christians. Thus all things fall into their place, and the Spirit connects us in heart with that which God is doing and will do for the glory of Christ. Even though keeping God's law cannot earn us salvation, God clearly expects us to keep His law after we've been forgiven (through repentance and baptism) for breaking it. And there were reasons why Peter was grievously in fault, particularly as he did no longer adhere to the law, but lived as one conscious of the freedom from it which the gospel gives those who believe in a risen Christ. If God loved us like that then the love of Christ constrains us. The word used here ( dakno), means, properly, to bite, to sting; and here seems to be used in the sense of contending and striving - a metaphor probably taken from dogs and wild beasts. Bring in one part of law, and you fall under the authority of the whole. That is, the apostle, instead of regarding his despised freedom from the law as a just reproach, glories in it. When God gives a pledge not of possessing the gate of enemies, when He speaks of the blessing of the nations, instead of the overthrow of Israel's foes, then he speaks simply of "thy seed." For the world there is nothing yet executed, any more than the great results of grace for the saints as yet appear in their fulness. And the old flesh likes to get people excited and stirred up like that. "Devour" describes hurtful actions that linger on and on as far as time is concerned. The glory which comes from men is vain-glory, which, instead of being desirous of, we should be dead to. He sees the right, feels the good, desires the holy, but never, accomplishes. Or I can walk after the Spirit and say, "Oh Lord, it doesn't matter. Galatians 5:13 (NASB) Verse Thoughts We are not under the Law, but under grace. No doubt also his line of procedure did not at all consort with their desires, who were sticklers for earthly order, and a line that looks safe and respectable to natural eyes. And so Paul is standing against this teaching in his letter to the Galatians, and in chapter five, he said. What Satan aims at is, that people should not count themselves what they are, and that they should be always slipping into what they are not. Mark, again, the strength of the expression. 2. Help us to express our faith in love every day by loving our neighbor as ourselves. The fate of any group permitting such a development issues inevitably in that of "The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat": The apostle said as much in this very passage.
